Cultural Residue | 1994
installation at Villa Arson, Nice, France, 1994
This work was made at the Villa Arson in 1994 during my residency there. It deals with breath and its role in production of language and culture. The sites of this work are a telephone booth, the glass separations with holes found at banks and passport offices, and two chairs positioned opposite from each other. The entire work concerned language and difference as form of cultural contamination and how the fear of this contamination led to forms of racism perpetrated against minorities.
